Hans Spemann (German embryologist)
Hans Spemann was a German embryologist renowned for his pioneering work in developmental biology. He studied how embryos develop and discovered that certain regions of an embryo influence the formation of specific body parts. His famous experiment involved dividing and grafting parts of a developing embryo, which showed that some cells have the ability to guide the development of other cells. This work helped reveal the concept of embryonic "induction," where one tissue affects the development of another. Spemann’s research significantly advanced our understanding of how complex organisms develop from a single cell, earning him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1935.
