Hōnen's Senchaku (Selection of the Nembutsu)

Hōnen’s Senchaku (Selection of the Nembutsu) is a foundational principle in Pure Land Buddhism that emphasizes trusting in the repetition of the Nembutsu (chanting “Namu Amida Butsu”) as the sole method for achieving salvation. Hōnen taught that sincere, single-minded reliance on this practice is sufficient for rebirth in the Pure Land, regardless of one’s personal qualities or efforts. Instead of complex rituals or other practices, Hōnen prioritized the straightforward act of invoking Amida Buddha’s name as the accessible, effective means for all practitioners to attain enlightenment and liberation from suffering.
