gustatory system
The gustatory system, or sense of taste, allows us to detect flavors through taste buds primarily located on the tongue. These taste buds contain sensory cells that respond to five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory). When food interacts with these cells, they send signals via nerves to the brain, which interprets the signals to identify tastes. This system helps us enjoy food, detect spoiled or harmful substances, and influences digestion and appetite regulation. Overall, the gustatory system plays a vital role in our sensory experience and nutritional health.
