Great Serpent Mound

Great Serpent Mound is an ancient effigy mound located in Adams County, Ohio. It resembles a snake or serpent, stretching about 1,348 feet long and featuring a coiled tail and a circular head. Believed to have been constructed by indigenous peoples, possibly the Adena or Fort Ancient cultures, around 1000 to 300 BCE, its purpose remains debated among archaeologists. Some suggest it served as a ceremonial site or astronomical observatory. The mound is significant as a cultural symbol, reflecting the history and beliefs of Native American communities in the region. It is now a protected historic site.
