Great Benin

Great Benin refers to the historical kingdom located in present-day southern Nigeria, known for its rich culture, advanced governance, and impressive artistry, particularly in bronze and ivory sculptures. Founded in the 11th century, it reached its height in the 15th and 16th centuries under the leadership of a series of kings, or Obas. The kingdom was renowned for its impressive walls and the artistic craftsmanship of its people. Great Benin's influence extended through trade and diplomacy until its decline during the 19th century, particularly following British colonial incursions, culminating in the looting of its artifacts.
