Gray's Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory

Gray’s Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory suggests that our behavior is influenced by three brain systems that regulate our responses to rewards and threats. The Behavioral Approach System (BAS) drives us toward positive outcomes and rewards, making us eager and motivated. The Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS) makes us cautious or anxious in new or threatening situations, promoting avoidance. The Fight-Flight System (FFS) prepares us to confront or escape danger. Together, these systems shape our personality and behavior, influencing how we pursue goals, respond to stress, and manage risks in our environment.
