granuloma

A granuloma is a small area of inflammation in the body formed when the immune system tries to isolate substances it perceives as harmful, such as bacteria, fungi, or irritants. It consists of immune cells that gather together to wall off the offending material, preventing it from spreading. Granulomas are common in certain infections and chronic inflammatory conditions. They often appear as lumps or nodules and can sometimes cause tissue damage. The formation of granulomas is a sign that the body is actively responding to a persistent irritant or infection.
