Governor-General of New France

The Governor-General of New France was the chief official appointed by the French crown to oversee the colony’s administration, defense, and relations with Indigenous peoples. Serving as the highest authority on-site, the Governor-General managed military affairs, enforced colonial policies, and represented France’s interests. Although the colony had other leaders, such as the Bishop and Intendant, the Governor-General held significant power, especially in military and diplomatic matters. His role was crucial in maintaining order, expanding settlements, and defending against external threats during France’s colonial era in North America.
