Governor-General of Australia

The Governor-General of Australia is the representative of the monarch (currently the King) in Australia. Appointed by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister, the Governor-General carries out various ceremonial and constitutional duties, such as opening Parliament and giving royal assent to legislation, which is needed for laws to take effect. They also represent Australia at official events and engage with the community. While the position is largely ceremonial, the Governor-General plays an important role in Australia's parliamentary democracy and acts as a link between the government and the monarchy.
