Gorter
Gorter was a Dutch physiologist best known for his work on cell membranes. He proposed that the cell membrane consists of a lipid bilayer, meaning two layers of lipid molecules arranged back-to-back, forming a thin, flexible barrier around cells. His experiments involved spreading red blood cell membranes onto a surface and measuring their surface area, leading him to estimate that the membrane is a double layer, not a single sheet. This insight was fundamental in understanding how cell membranes function as protective barriers and facilitate transport between the cell and its environment.
