Gorilla Sign Language
Gorilla Sign Language is a form of communication developed to allow gorillas, particularly those raised in captivity, to express themselves through gestures. Pioneered by researchers like Dr. Francine Patterson and her work with Koko the gorilla, this sign language comprises hand signs representing objects, actions, and emotions. Koko famously used it to convey her feelings, thoughts, and requests, showcasing a level of cognitive ability and emotional complexity previously unrecognized in non-human animals. While not as structured as human languages, it provides insight into gorillas’ intelligence and their capacity for communication and social interaction.
