glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme found in all cells that plays a key role in protecting red blood cells from damage. It helps produce a molecule called NADPH, which is essential for neutralizing harmful oxidants and maintaining the integrity of cell membranes. A deficiency in G6PD can lead to increased vulnerability of red blood cells to breaking down under certain stresses, such as infections or certain medications, causing a condition known as hemolytic anemia. This enzyme is especially important in tissues that have high energy demands and are exposed to oxidative stress.
