Glossators
Glossators were scholars, particularly during the Middle Ages, who commented on and explained texts, especially legal documents and works of classical literature. They added "glosses," or notes, to the margins of manuscripts to clarify meanings, interpret difficult passages, and provide context. Their work was crucial in preserving knowledge and aiding understanding of texts that were often complex or written in Latin. Glossators contributed significantly to the development of legal studies and the interpretation of ancient works, laying the groundwork for later scholarship and the teaching of law and literature in European universities.
