Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) is a worldwide effort to eliminate poliovirus, the virus that causes polio, a disease that can cause paralysis. Launched in 1988, GPEI involves governments, international organizations, and health workers working together to vaccinate children, improve sanitation, and monitor virus cases. The goal is to stop all transmission of the poliovirus everywhere, making the world polio-free. Through widespread immunization and surveillance, GPEI has significantly reduced cases globally, moving towards the eventual eradication of the disease.
