George Buerger

George Buerger was a German surgeon and researcher known for describing a condition now called Buerger's disease, or thromboangiitis obliterans. This is a rare vascular disorder that causes inflammation and clotting in small and medium-sized arteries and veins, mainly affecting the arms and legs. It leads to reduced blood flow, resulting in pain, ulcers, and sometimes tissue death, often in young, male smokers. Buerger's work helped identify this disease, emphasizing the importance of smoking cessation and proper diagnosis to prevent severe complications.
