General William T. Sherman was a prominent Union military leader during the American Civil War (1861-1865). He is best known for his “March to the Sea,” where he led troops from Atlanta to Savannah, implementing a strategy of total war. This approach aimed to weaken the Confederate war effort by destroying infrastructure and resources. Sherman believed that such tactics would hasten the war's end. His bold strategies and unyielding resolve significantly contributed to the Union's victory, making him a key figure in American military history. Sherman later served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army.
