Gavialis gangeticus
Gavialis gangeticus, commonly known as the gharial, is a large, slender crocodile native to the Indian subcontinent. Unlike other crocodiles, it has a long, narrow snout resembling a running toy, which helps it catch fish efficiently. It spends most of its life in freshwater rivers and lakes. The gharial is excellent at swimming and diving, with some of the longest and thinnest snouts among crocodilians. Its distinctive appearance and specialized diet make it unique. However, due to habitat loss and pollution, it is critically endangered, with only small populations remaining in India and Nepal.
