Garifuna

The Garifuna are an Afro-indigenous people primarily found along the Caribbean coasts of Central America, including Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Their unique heritage combines African, Indigenous Caribbean, and European origins, resulting in a rich culture marked by distinctive music, dance, language, and traditions. The Garifuna trace their roots to shipwrecked Africans who mixed with the indigenous Carib and Arawak peoples in the Caribbean during the 17th century. Today, they maintain a strong cultural identity through their language (Garifuna), practices, and community involvement, celebrating their history and resilience in the face of historical challenges.
