Ġgantija Temples

The Ġgantija Temples are an ancient megalithic complex located on the island of Gozo in Malta, dating back to around 3600-2500 BCE. They are among the world's oldest free-standing stone structures and are considered a significant example of prehistoric temple architecture. Built without mortar, the massive limestone stones were carefully arranged to form large, curved walls and chambers, likely used for religious or ceremonial purposes. The name "Ġgantija" means "giant" in Maltese, reflecting local legends about their construction. The temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering insights into early human religious practices and social organization.
