Ganga Action Plan
The Ganga Action Plan was an initiative launched by the Indian government in 1986 to improve the cleanliness and health of the Ganges River, India’s most sacred and vital waterway. Its goal was to reduce pollution caused by sewage, industrial waste, and encroachments by constructing sewage treatment plants and promoting community awareness. Despite challenges, it aimed to restore the river’s ecological balance and ensure safe water for millions who depend on it. The plan has evolved into more comprehensive projects like the Namami Gange initiative to further the river’s rejuvenation.
