GAM (Free Aceh Movement)

GAM, or the Free Aceh Movement, was an armed separatist group in Aceh, Indonesia, fighting for independence from Indonesian control. Originating in the 1970s, GAM sought greater autonomy and control over local resources, especially natural gas and oil. The conflict lasted for about three decades, causing significant suffering and loss of life. In 2005, the Indonesian government and GAM reached a peace agreement, leading to a ceasefire and some autonomy for Aceh. The movement's goal was to establish an independent Aceh, but today, it operates primarily as a political organization advocating for regional interests within Indonesia.
