Fungus-farming termites

Fungus-farming termites are a specialized group of termites that cultivate fungi within their colonies. They gather plant material, such as wood or leaf litter, and bring it back to their nests to serve as a substrate for fungal growth. The termites then feed on the cultivated fungi, which efficiently break down tough plant fibers, making nutrients easier to absorb. This mutualistic relationship allows them to thrive on a diet that would be difficult to digest otherwise. Their farming activities significantly impact ecosystems by recycling plant material and influencing soil health.
