Fruit flies are small insects, typically about 1/8 inch long, known for infesting ripe or decaying fruit and vegetables. They belong to the Drosophilidae family and are common in homes, kitchens, and orchards. Fruit flies have reddish eyes, tan bodies, and distinguished bristles on their heads. They are attracted to fermenting organic material, where they lay eggs that hatch into larvae, accelerating decay. Despite their brief lifespan of around 30 days, they reproduce rapidly, which can lead to quick infestations. They are often used in scientific research due to their simple genetics and short life cycle.
