fructose malabsorption
Fructose malabsorption occurs when the small intestine has difficulty properly absorbing fructose, a natural sugar found in fruits, honey, and some processed foods. When absorption is impaired, excess fructose reaches the large intestine, where it can ferment and cause symptoms like bloating, gas, diarrhea, and stomach pain. This condition is different from a food allergy and is often managed by reducing intake of high-fructose foods. It is relatively common and can often be diagnosed through breath tests. Treating it usually involves dietary adjustments to minimize symptoms while maintaining a balanced diet.
