Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)
The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) was a proposed agreement aimed at creating a vast trading block among countries in North, Central, and South America, as well as the Caribbean. The goal was to remove trade barriers, such as tariffs and restrictions, to encourage economic cooperation and increase trade between these nations. Although discussions began in the 1990s, the FTAA was never finalized due to disagreements over issues like agricultural policy and labor rights. Ultimately, it aimed to boost economic growth, create jobs, and stimulate investment across the Americas.
