Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC)
Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a principle that ensures that Indigenous peoples have the right to give or deny consent for projects affecting their land, resources, and communities. "Free" means no coercion should be involved; "Prior" indicates that consent must be obtained before any activities begin; and "Informed" ensures that communities have all necessary information to make a decision. FPIC is important for respecting the rights and autonomy of Indigenous populations, promoting meaningful dialogue and collaboration with them before making decisions that impact their lives and environments.
