Frankia (actinobacteria)

Frankia is a type of bacteria belonging to the actinobacteria group, known for forming symbiotic relationships with certain plants called actinorhizal plants. These bacteria can fix atmospheric nitrogen, converting it into a form the plants can use for growth. In return, the plants provide Frankia with carbohydrates. This mutual relationship helps both survive in nutrient-poor soils, enhancing plant growth and soil fertility. Frankia bacteria are primarily found in the roots of specific woody plants like alder and bayberry, playing a key role in nutrient cycling and ecosystem health.
