
Francisco José de Caldas
Francisco José de Caldas was a Colombian polymath, born in 1768, known for his contributions to science, geography, and literature. As a prominent figure in the early 19th century, he conducted significant research in botany and geology, helping to advance knowledge of Colombia's natural resources. Caldas was also involved in the independence movement, advocating for Colombia's freedom from Spanish rule. Tragically, he was executed in 1816 by Spanish authorities for his revolutionary activities. Today, he is celebrated as a national hero and a key figure in Colombia’s intellectual history, with many places and institutions named in his honor.
