Foscarnet

Foscarnet is an antiviral medication used to treat certain viral infections, particularly those caused by herpes viruses, including cytomegalovirus (CMV) and resistant herpes simplex virus. It works by directly inhibiting the virus’s ability to replicate its DNA, without relying on the virus's usual enzymes that drugs like acyclovir target. Foscarnet is often reserved for infections that don't respond to other treatments. Because it can affect healthy cells and cause side effects like kidney problems and electrolyte imbalances, it’s administered under close medical supervision.
