folliculogenesis
Folliculogenesis is the process by which ovarian follicles develop in the female ovary. It begins with the activation of a small group of dormant follicles, which then grow and mature through several stages, involving cell growth, hormone signaling, and structural changes. This process prepares an individual follicle to release an egg during ovulation. Throughout folliculogenesis, the follicle increases in size and gains the ability to produce reproductive hormones like estrogen. Ultimately, usually one dominant follicle fully matures and releases an egg, while others degenerate. This cycle is essential for fertility and occurs regularly as part of the menstrual cycle.
