Fashoda Incident
The Fashoda Incident of 1898 was a diplomatic crisis between Britain and France in Africa. Both nations sought control over territories in East Africa; Britain aimed for control of the Nile and Egypt, while France wanted influence in the region. When French forces appeared at Fashoda in Sudan, Britain saw it as a threat. Tensions rose, but diplomatic negotiations eventually resolved the conflict peacefully, with France withdrawing. The incident highlighted European rivalry in Africa during the "Scramble for Africa" and marked Britain's dominance on the continent, while France's influence in the region diminished.
