FAP (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis)

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is a hereditary condition where individuals develop hundreds to thousands of small growths called polyps in the colon and rectum, usually starting in their teens or early adulthood. If left untreated, these polyps have a very high chance of turning into colorectal cancer, often by middle age. FAP is caused by a genetic mutation passed down through families, and early detection through screening is crucial. Treatment typically involves preventive surgery to remove the colon, significantly reducing cancer risk, along with ongoing monitoring and management.
