Föhn Wind
A Föhn wind is a warm, dry wind that occurs when moist air rises over mountains, cools, and releases its moisture as precipitation on the windward side. The now drier air descends on the leeward side, warming up as it compresses. This process results in the leeward side experiencing sudden warmth, dryness, and clear skies—often causing rapid temperature increases and dry conditions. Föhn winds are common in mountain regions like the Alps and can influence weather patterns, often contributing to wildfires, rapid snowmelt, or changes in local climate.
