Experiential avoidance

Experiential avoidance is a mental process where a person tries to avoid or escape uncomfortable feelings, thoughts, or memories, even if doing so causes additional problems. Instead of facing or accepting these internal experiences, they may engage in behaviors like distraction, suppression, or avoidance, hoping to reduce immediate distress. While this might provide short-term relief, it often leads to increased emotional suffering and limits personal growth over time. Recognizing and addressing experiential avoidance can be an important step toward better emotional well-being and healthier coping strategies.
