Escherichia coli O157:H7
Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) is a type of bacteria that can cause serious foodborne illness. It is often found in contaminated meat, contaminated water, or raw produce. Infection can lead to symptoms like severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), and vomiting. In some cases, it can cause a dangerous complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which affects the kidneys. Good food handling, proper cooking, and hygiene help prevent infection. Most people recover fully, but young children and the elderly are at higher risk for severe illness.
