Equites

Equites were a social class of wealthy Roman businessmen and horsemen, originally cavalry members in the Roman army. Over time, they evolved into a privileged order involved in commerce, finance, and bureaucracy, just below the senatorial aristocracy. Their status was based on wealth derived from trade and business activities rather than noble lineage. Equites played a significant role in Rome’s economy and politics, often serving in administrative or financial roles, and their influence was a key aspect of Roman social structure during the Empire.
