Ephors
Ephors were a group of five officials in ancient Sparta who played a key role in governance. They were elected annually and served as overseers of the kings and the legal system. Their responsibilities included supervising education, enforcing laws, and maintaining public morals. Ephors had significant authority, often acting as a check on royal power, and could even hold the right to summon and preside over the assembly of citizens. Their role helped balance the power between Sparta’s kings and its citizens, ensuring stability and adherence to laws in the Spartan society.
