Enzymatic cofactor
An enzymatic cofactor is a non-protein compound that assists an enzyme in speeding up a chemical reaction. Think of it as a helper molecule that binds to the enzyme, enabling it to perform its function more effectively. Cofactors can be inorganic ions like magnesium or zinc, or organic molecules called coenzymes, such as vitamins. Without these cofactors, many enzymes would work very slowly or not at all. They are essential for proper enzyme activity and, consequently, for many vital biological processes in the body.
