Enteropathogenic E. coli
Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a type of bacteria that can cause diarrhea, especially in young children. It infects the intestines by attaching to the lining, damaging the cells and disrupting normal fluid absorption. This leads to watery stools, sometimes accompanied by fever or abdominal cramps. EPEC is typically contracted through contaminated food or water and spreads easily in settings with poor sanitation. Good hygiene practices, such as handwashing and proper food handling, are important for prevention. While usually not serious in healthy individuals, EPEC can cause significant illness in vulnerable populations.
