Enteric neuropathies

Enteric neuropathies are disorders affecting the nerves that control the gastrointestinal (digestive) system. These nerves regulate functions like muscle movements, coordinating digestion and bowel movements. When these nerves are damaged or malfunctioning, it can lead to symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or difficulty swallowing. Conditions like Hirschsprung’s disease or achalasia are examples of enteric neuropathies. They can result from genetic factors, nerve damage, or other underlying health issues. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential to manage symptoms and improve quality of life, often involving medications, dietary changes, or surgical interventions.
