Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD)

Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) is a specialized procedure used to remove certain types of early-stage tumors or lesions from the gastrointestinal tract, such as the stomach or esophagus. During ESD, a doctor uses an endoscope—a flexible tube with a camera and light—to see the area inside the body. They then carefully cut the tissue beneath the surface (submucosa) to excise the abnormal growth. This technique allows for the removal of larger lesions that wouldn’t be possible with standard methods, preserving more surrounding healthy tissue and minimizing the need for invasive surgery.
