Ejército Republicano
The Ejército Republicano, or Republican Army, was the military force established by the Spanish Second Republic to defend the government during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It comprised volunteer soldiers, militia members, and later, regular army troops fighting against the nationalist forces led by General Franco, who aimed to overthrow the republic and establish a dictatorship. The Republican Army fought to preserve Spain’s democratic government and its progressive reforms, but faced significant challenges, including political divisions and limited resources. Their struggle is remembered as part of Spain’s broader effort to defend its democracy against fascist insurgents.
