Einstein's letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt
In 1939, physicist Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning about the potential for Nazi Germany to develop atomic weapons. He highlighted the importance of research into nuclear fission, a process discovered in 1938, which could lead to powerful bombs. Einstein urged the U.S. government to accelerate its own atomic research and consider the implications for national security. This letter ultimately helped initiate the Manhattan Project, the secret program that developed the first atomic bombs during World War II, changing the course of warfare and international relations.
