Edward Cornwallis

Edward Cornwallis was a British military officer and colonial administrator who founded Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1749. As the first governor of Nova Scotia, he played a key role in establishing British control in the region, which was then inhabited by Indigenous peoples and French settlers. Cornwallis is known for his efforts to promote British settlement and military readiness. However, he is also remembered for issuing orders that led to the removal of Indigenous and Acadian communities, which has led to controversy and calls for his statues to be taken down due to his role in conflicts and displacement of Indigenous peoples.
