Edo (Tokyo)

Edo was the former name of Tokyo, Japan’s capital. Originally a small fishing village, Edo grew rapidly in the 17th century as the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate, becoming one of the world's largest cities by the 18th century. It was a political and cultural center, known for its strict social order, unique arts, and vibrant urban life. In 1868, Edo was renamed Tokyo, meaning "Eastern Capital," as Japan transitioned to the Meiji era and modernized. Today, Tokyo is a bustling metropolis blending historic traditions with cutting-edge innovation, making it a global hub for finance, technology, and culture.
