EBCDIC
EBCDIC (Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code) is an early character encoding system developed by IBM to represent text in computers. Unlike the more common ASCII system, which is widely used today, EBCDIC uses a unique set of binary numbers to encode characters, particularly on IBM mainframe and midrange systems. It assigns specific code values to letters, numbers, and symbols, enabling computers to store and process text accurately. Though less common now, EBCDIC was essential in legacy IBM systems and played a significant role in early computing data management.
