Earth’s atmosphere
Earth’s atmosphere is a thin layer of gases surrounding the planet, composed mainly of nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%), with trace amounts of other gases like argon and carbon dioxide. It extends roughly 10,000 kilometers above the surface, gradually thinning with altitude. The atmosphere regulates temperature, protects us from harmful solar radiation, and enables weather and climate systems. It also provides the air we breathe and is essential for life. Despite its thinness compared to Earth’s size, this gaseous envelope plays a critical role in maintaining conditions suitable for life.
