Durkheim's suicide theory

Durkheim’s suicide theory suggests that the likelihood of someone taking their own life is influenced by their level of social integration and regulation. When individuals feel disconnected from their community or lack clear social norms and support, they are more prone to despair and hopelessness, increasing suicide risk. Conversely, strong social bonds and clear norms can protect against it. Durkheim identified different types of suicide—like egoistic (due to isolation) and anomic (due to societal instability)—highlighting how social factors shape individual vulnerability.
