Disuse atrophy
Disuse atrophy occurs when muscles weaken and shrink because they are not regularly used or stimulated. This can happen due to prolonged immobility, such as injury, illness, or staying in bed for extended periods. Without activity, muscle fibers decrease in size and strength, leading to reduced muscle mass and function. The process is reversible with proper use and exercise, which helps rebuild the muscle tissue. Essentially, muscles need regular activity to stay healthy; when they are neglected, they diminish over time.
