discectomy

A discectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at relieving pressure on nerves caused by a damaged spinal disc. When a disc herniates or bulges, it can irritate nearby nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness. During the procedure, a surgeon removes the part of the disc that is pressing on the nerve, often through a small incision. This helps reduce pain and improve movement. Discectomy is commonly performed for lumbar (lower back) or cervical (neck) disc issues and is typically effective in restoring nerve function and alleviating discomfort.
